Guyum-guyuman Festival

One of the most festive celebrations Your Pagemaker attended was the 4th Guyum-guyuman Festivalof the Municipality of Pontevedra in my home province, Capiz.Though it started as Balintawakan Festival in 1988, it was renamed Guyum-guyuman Festival in 2008 to depict the way of life of the inhabitants of this town formerly called “Caguyuman.” This literally means "anthill" because many people from neighboring municipalities came to the area like a swarm of ants for commerce and trade. Barter trading is still practiced in the municipality during Market days.

The town’s annual municipal and religious fiesta last May 8, 2012 was highlighted by a series of events. The most notable ones were the reenactment of Caguyumanons like Barter trading, the exciting Subay sa Suba sang Tinagong Dagat, mangrove rehabilitation-planting activities, awarding of notable outstanding Pontevedrahons citizens and organizations plus the spectacular Guyum-guyuman tribal streetdancing.

This is simultaneously celebrated with the religious fiesta of St. Catherine of Alexandria, the patron saint of Mambusao, which culminates onNovember 25th. The week-long festivity includes merry making, beauty pageant and cultural shows, street dancing, parades, novenas and masses, exhibits, and the popular Food Festival.

The Inilusan is to Mambusao as Halaran is to Roxas City. The Mambusao cultural religious festivity was first introduced last 1975 as the year’s festival theme. The term Inilusan means the mutual and reciprocal giving and sharing of food in generous measure and in the spirit of fraternal goodwill that permeates the daily life ofMambusaonons.

Sinadya sa Halaran

The Sinadya sa Halaran Festival is the joint festival of the City of Roxas and the Province of Capiz. It is a mixed festival in that it is celebrated for both cultural and religious reasons. It is celebrated every first weekend of December in commemoration of the Feast of the Virgin of the Immaculate Concepcion who also happens to be the patroness of the City of Roxas. Sinadya sa Halaran boasts of colorful activities like the grand parade of festivals, the fluvial parade, the lighted river floaters. There is also the traditional seafood festival and the grand pyrotechnic display.

Sinadya sa Halaran is one of Roxas City’s most important annual events and is fusion of two festivals – “Sinadya” (City) and “Halaran” (Province) which literally means joy in sharing and thanksgiving. It is celebrated on December 4-8 to commemorate the religious activities that embody the true Capiceño spirit.
